Onoufrios Desypris
Onoufrios Desypris, our beloved marble sculptor, teacher and friend, is living a life full of marble dust and sea salt which he shares with his wife, their two children and his motorcycle.
"I met the craft when I was very young and it touched me so deeply that I promised to embark on a grand journey with it. But first I had to learn how.”
While studying at the School of Fine Arts in Tinos, Onoufrios was mentored by the skilled hands of Giannis Maniatakis, whom he still praises to this day. During his four years there, he immersed himself completely in the craft, honing his skills by working alongside sculptors Georgios Tsakiris and Michalis Vidalis, absorbing their wisdom and mastering the marble.
In 1997, he opened his studio, a space that quite literally hangs by a cliff at the edge of Ysternia, Tinos, overlooking the wild sea. His creations are stories etched in stone that can be found in public spaces, adorning churches and private realms scattered across Greece and abroad. Onoufrios often partakes in group and thematic exhibitions, which allows him to express his creative side a lot more freely.
Today, when it comes to making, it’s not a question of “how” but “why”. "I draw inspiration from the past, but I'm always attuned to the present. Marble speaks to me, not just of its history, but of the needs of today." Always seeking, always exploring, Onoufrios is hoping for encounters and collaborations that will inspire his next chapters as a maker.
